The Arizona Land Subsidence Group azlsg.org |
Welcome to The Arizona Land Subsidence Group! The ALSG was jointly created by the geological and engineering communities as a venue for discussing the state of knowledge regarding subsidence of Arizona’s alluvial basins. A chief goal of ALSG is to provide a forum for sharing information, ideas, and experiences. The Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS) subsequently requested that the ALSG serve as a technical advisory committee for their State-mandated Earth Fissure Mapping Program.
ALSG is a voluntary collaboration of professionals that includes representatives from AZGS, the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR), the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), the Flood Control District of Maricopa County (FCDMC), the US Geological Survey (USGS), Pinal County, the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, utilities serving Arizona, and consulting geoscience and engineering specialists.
Land subsidence and resulting earth fissures have been part of the south-central Arizona landscape since the 1930s. With urban growth expanding into previously undeveloped or agricultural lands, the geologic hazards related to subsidence and fissures are steadily encroaching on rapidly developing areas with detrimental and costly impact. As a result, there is a growing need for information and tools to deal with these hazards.
ALSG is dedicated to helping policy-makers make informed risk management decisions to mitigate impacts of these hazards on public safety and welfare.
